Chapter 9 of The Great Gatsby truly decodes the mystery of James Gatz. The chapter begins with a plethora of policemen and photographers all recording and investigating Gatsby’s death. Nick Carraway knows that Gatsby would want a lot of people at his funeral, so off goes Nick to try to gather all of Gatsby’s “friends”.
After calling many people such as the Buchanans and Meyer Wolfsheim, Nick discovers that although many peoples loved Gatsby, he never had a personal relationship with any of them that was strong enough for them to attend his funeral. After trying to get a hold of people, Gatsby’s father, Henry C. Gatz, shows up to Gatsby’s house. Surprisingly proud of the life of the son who left him many years ago, Gatsby’s dad and Nick tour Gatsby’s property and celebrating his life. Only a handful show up to Gatsby’s funeral, and Nick finally realizes the truth behind James Gatz, and the tragic reality of the ever-so-sought-after “American Dream”. Nick realizes that the East will forever be haunted for him because of all that he has witnessed there. The fast-pace and scandalous lifestyle is not for him so he decides to leave the East and heads home to the West. Nick is left with a bitter aftertaste of the summer and decides to leave behind everything he established in the East.
